Pimples are always a conundrum for anyone, especially for acne sufferers. They always leave a question whether to pop them or not, and how. Dr. Oz, however, gives us the answers including the right way to do the popping.

In a video clip now available in Oprah.com, Dr. Mehmet Oz, who also hosts his own health program called Dr. Oz Show, tells us that although it's okay to pop pimples, most of us are doing it the wrong way.

For example, squeezing the surrounding skin so the pimple breaks and pus comes out only leaves more damaged skin as the constant pushing and applied pressure destroys the healthy one.

Dr. Oz demonstrates the proper method using a gigantic pimple prop. To pop the pimple, you open the skin in a parallel direction. This way, you work with only dead skin cells, preventing yourself from hurting the healthy skin and avoiding scarring. Using a sterile needle, slowly move it upward then allow the pus to come out.

Although Dr. Oz's recommendation about pimples and popping may be contrary to what most skin experts and dermatologists suggest, they all agree that it's the squeezing and constant popping that create more issues later as they only lead to scarring and more inflammation.

Pimples, nodules, whiteheads, and blackheads are all signs of acne, one of the most common skin problems in the United States. Although it can appear at any time in your life, it's more prevalent during teenage years mainly because of hormone changes. This abnormal hormone production causes the body to produce more oil in the sebaceous glands.

As oil tries to move upward into the surface of the skin, it mixes with the dead skin cells, later breeding acne-causing bacteria.

Acne can be acute or chronic, which means it can recur many times during your lifetime. Fortunately, there are already many available treatments.
