Showrunner Stephen Moffat has confirmed details of the upcoming special Christmas Episode that will bring back Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman! Filming begins for "Sherlock" season 4 on 2016 is another good news, which leads to a slightly saddening update---a release date set for 2017.

It's not a surprise for fans to find out that season 4 will take time to arrive. "Sherlock" starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman has been among the highly anticipated TV series since season 1 in 2010. "Sherlock" seasons come almost in every two years, but since there's a special Christmas episode coming this year, another additional year of waiting for season 4 could be forgivable.

Showrunner Steven Moffat revealed both good news and bad news to fans for the release date of "Sherlock" season 4. According to DigitalSpy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will return to film season 4 in spring 2016----this means that a release date of 2017 is likely.

Moffat added in the report, "['Sherlock' season 4] is going to be... I suppose you'd say... consequences. It's consequences. Chickens come to roost. It's dark in some ways - obviously it's great fun and a Sherlock Holmes romp and all that - but there's a sense of things coming back to bite you."

Meanwhile, a special Christmas episode of "Sherlock" will be coming to fans this December. It will feature both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman during the Victorian period, and will be completely separate from previous "Sherlock" seasons.

According to EW, Moffat shared "The special is its own thing. We wouldn't have done the story we're doing, and the way we're doing it, if we didn't have this special. It's not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it - as we could hardly conceal - it's Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It's kind of in its own little bubble."

"Sherlock" season 4 release date is set on a vague 2017.
