What can fans expect when Naughty Dog finally confirms "The Last of Us 2" release date?
Speculations hinge on the possibility that the new title could be a prequel, and could not feature Joel and Ellie as the lead characters, but Marlene and the fireflies.
"It's during this opening montage that we learn of the fireflies. This organisation rebelled against the leadership and controlling quarantine zone authorities," Movie Pilot noted.
"Their history is a pretty fascinating one, and the potential for The Last of Us 2 being a prequel following this uprising would be fairly high. We could take charge of Marlene as she leads the revolution, or we could possibly play as one of the other members of the rebel group. Maybe the story could eventually run in tandem with Joel and Ellie's, as we play as someone else living their life during this time."
In an interview, Naughty Dog video game developer Neil Druckmann said that they're still not sure whether they want a sequel or a reboot of the first installment.
"We have such limited resources, and it's a question of where you put the resources," he said, as reported by Franchise Herald. "It's something where we can have a feel of where the demand is, and where our time is best spent. It's something that we'll figure out as we move forward."
"If you're asking about a sequel... right now I'd say it's 50/50."
Given the circumstance, Druckmann is also hoping that the "The Last of Us 2" release date could be confirmed with voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson reprising their roles.
"I'd probably reconsider the story at that point. They are Joel and Ellie to me," he said.
