"The Last Guardian" PS4 is slated for release next year.

The trailer of "The Last Guardian" PS4 was revealed at PlayStation's E3 2015 press conference. The video gave fans a glimpse of the adventure that awaits them in Fumito Ueda's upcoming game. At the end of the clip, the game's release date was revealed to be in 2016.

IGN reported that Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony's Worldwide Studios, confirmed that "The Last Guardian" PS4 is in development and will be released in the future. The game's development started in 2007 and was unveiled to the public at E3 2009.

"The demo ('The Last Guardian') shown (in 2009) was (taken) straight from the dev kit; running on the engine but it wasn't running up to speed as shown in the video," Yoshida explained about the eight-year delay of the game.

"The game was running on lower frame rate, but we captured them frame by frame and sped it up for the 20-second video, fully expecting the final game to eventually run on the desired speed."

He added that the development team spent a lot of time in optimizing the game but were unable to achieve the required performance. The team also tried to develop it on PS3 but still was not able to get the game they envisioned.

If they were to continue on PS3, they would have had to compromise on the vision of the project in terms of scope, size of the levels and number of characters. In 2012, the developers decided to put the game on hold and aim for Sony's next console which was PS4.

"We were not sure if we were able to finish the game on the PS3 and even if we did, we knew that we would have to cut corners to make it run on the PS3," Yoshida said.
