Almost three decades and now fans are hearing the return of Maverick! Original cast member Tom Cruise is set to star in  "Top Gun 2" and it has all been confirmed! Sequel will, however, replace old school fighter jets with drones---still hyped?

In an interview with Collider, Skydance's David Ellison revealed details of the upcoming sequel, "Top Gun 2," and confirmed that indeed Tom Cruise will return as cast member and reprise his role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell.

He said, "There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no 'Top Gun' without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick."

While "Top Gun 2" is currently being written by Justin Marks, known for his work in the 2009 film "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li," Ellison confirmed details of the sequel apart from the already-good-news of bringing the original Maverick cast back.

"I think this is a movie that should be in 3-D and in IMAX, and again something that you can shoot practically," Ellison explained. "As everyone knows with Tom, he is 100% going to want to be in those airplanes shooting it practically."

"It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we're actually going to produce so it's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we're gonna get to dive into in this movie."

Apart from lead star Tom Cruise, the original cast of the 1986 "Top Gun" film included Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Tom Skerritt and Anthony Edwards, directed by Tony Scott. Initially, "Top Gun 2" was to be directed by Scott as it was first planned in 2010, but the project went straight to an indefinite hold after Scott's passing.
