Fans still continue to wish for "Half Life 3" to be confirmed. But as latest reports suggested, that wish might not be granted as Valve might have decided to pull the plug on the franchise.
According to rumors, Valve has already started planning HL3, but just can't pursue the project at the meantime.
"The game is in development, the story is completed, but if Valve aren't willing to publish it, what can we do?" Movie Pilot noted. "Certain gamers aren't going to stop ruining things for other people, and we're not going to stop giving Valve money through steam and micro-transactions. Half-Life 3 may be well and truly dead."
"Allegedly, Half-Life 3 has been in development for years, however the crew that are currently working on the project amounts to about 10 people. AKA, Valve doesn't care about continuing Half-Life."
A lot of fan theories have spread like wildfire regarding the anticipated release's launch. One of the most popular, claimed that with the release of Valve's Source 2, it would not be long before developers will second it with a "Half Life 3" confirmed release date announcement.
"A Valve employee is free to work on whatever they want (to a certain degree). This can mean that a project will go undeveloped because nobody is interested," user Wuki said in a "Half Life 3" subreddit.
"However, this is unlikely. A while back, a list of HL3 developers was leaked, which had a big overlap with the Source 2 developers: from all components, 37 of the 48 HL3 devs are also in the Source 2 development team. It's likely that the developers wanted to get the new engine out before continuing with the game. And now Source 2 is officially announced, it will only take a couple of years centuries (note, Valve Time) for HL3 to come out."
"It's not officially cancelled, it's not officially announced. I believe it will arrive some day. But it's mostly speculation."
