"Wayward Pines" renewal for season 2 is still up in the air.

Although FOX has not yet confirmed whether or not the show's second season has been cancelled, director M. Night Shyamalan has already previously mentioned that the first season's finale was not created to be continued in a second season.

When the show first started, it was only greeted with a relatively lukewarm reception. However, towards the end of the first season, its fan base continued to grow and develop, especially after season 1's finale episode. At the end of "wayward Pines" season 1, Ethan Burke, David Pilcher, and Ms. Fisher all met their demise.

Ethan's son, Ben Burke, may have survived, but he did suffer a severe head injury that brought him to a three-year coma. After three years, he woke up to a new civilization. It was the very same Wayward Pines, except that it was being led by the children themselves, otherwise referred to as the First Generation. The adults were still there, but they were all kept in confinement, according to Fashion & Style.

The finale episode, alone, reeled in 3.9 million viewers, and has already been considered to be the highest rated scripted adult television program this summer. Still, Venture Capital Post reported that the ratings were apparently not enough to keep the show on-air.

Whether or not the show is gong to have a "Wayward Pines" renewal for season 2, executive producer Chad Hodge said that the previous season's finale episode did not offer any teaser for the second season. "It was not meant to tease a season 2," Hodge told Entertainment Weekly. "It was the end. Period. Really, what it does is it comes full circle."

Fortunately for fans who have been shipping for a "Wayward Pines" renewal, Cross Map has reported that Shyamalan is actually in negotiations with author Blake Crouch for a season 2.
