Rumor has it that they have actually not really broken up and only opted to downplay their relationship to make way for the actress' on-screen relationship with Jamie Dornan.

Yibada has reported that Johnson and Hitt are, once again, experiencing some relationship troubles just as "Fifty Shades Darker" will be reuniting Johnson and Dornan pretty soon.
Still, the timing may have only been coincidental, but it did not stop the dating rumors between Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan to rise again. That said, the relationship between Dakota Johnson and boyfriend Matthew Hitt have also started to be on the rocks.
The chemistry between Johnson and Dornan may be seen on the big screen. However, Dornan has refuted claims that they are dating in real life since he admitted that he has always been "smitten" with his wife, Amelia Warner. "I am more in love with her today than I was at the start," he said. Inquisitr reported that When asked if he had any personal interest on Johnson, Dornan flat-out answered, "No."
However, the latest string of rumors about Dornan and his "Fifty Shades Darker" co-star does not seem to help him convince the fans that they are not dating. Apparently, things are very complicated that filming for the raunchy sequel has been delayed.
According to The Stir, the film was actually "supposed to start shooting in the New Year so that it would be ready for a February 2017 release."
"New reports say Dornan felt compelled to stop filming because his wife, Amelia Warner, was upset and disturbed by scenes from the new movie that require her husband become extremely close to Johnson's character, Anastasia Steele," the source revealed.
