Fans may see a surprising twist of events regarding George R.R. Martin's "Winds of Winter" release date.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly a few months ago, the "Song of Ice and Fire" series creator admitted that the "Winds of Winter" release date has always been important to him. The author even confessed that he wished "it was out now" and even cleared out his desks to get the highly-anticipated book done.

Moreover, George R.R. Martin's "Winds of Winter" release date will reportedly have a big plot twist on a long-time character. "This is going to drive your readers crazy but I love it," he revealed.

"I'm still weighing whether to go that direction or not. It's a great twist. It's easy to do things that are shocking or unexpected, but they have to grow out of characters. They have to grow out of situations. Otherwise, it's just being shocking for being shocking."

It was previously reported that George R.R. Martin's "Winds of Winter" release date will also see the return of one of the characters who died in "Game of Thrones." Although Stannis Baratheon was killed off in the HBO series by Brienne, there was no battle scene depicted in the books yet.

George R.R. Martin confirmed that the character is, indeed, still alive when he was asked by a fan on his Live Journal. "In my books? Alive, beyond a doubt," Martin wrote.

A "Game of Thrones" movie, specifically about Robert's Rebellion, has been rumored to be in the works. However, the "Winds of Winter" author debunked these allegations. "There's been talk about it," he told Huffington Post. "I'd love to see one, but nothing is decided."

"Yes, completely false," the author also commented on his blog. "No one is working on any movie just now. And if there was a movie, it would not be about Robert's Rebellion."
