After the full trailer has been unleashed, the exact release date of the "Sherlock" special has been confirmed. Showrunner Steven Moffat talks details!

Latest news revealed that finally, a release date has been set for the highly anticipated return of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the BBC series, "Sherlock."

IMDB revealed what every "Sherlock" fans has been waiting for --- the release date. While it was obviously coming in December, the exact date hasn't been confirmed until the site posted the release date as Dec. 25 --- right smack on Christmas day.

The "Sherlock" special will be a separate entity to the previous chapters as well as the coming season 4. Steven Moffat brings Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman's Dr. John Watson who are back to the Victorian era, when the original 'Sherlock' was originally set.

"We've got, I think you can safely say, the Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson of a generation - we want to see them do it in the proper outfits, just once," shared Moffat with DigitalSpy.

Talking to BBC, the "Sherlock" showrunner further added, "The 'Sherlock' special is set in Victorian times, so it's a different version of the show we're used to."

"It's like we checked the books and discovered we'd set it in the wrong time period by mistake and it's like we're correcting it for 90 minutes," said Moffat.

With the release date set on Christmas day,  the "Sherlock" special has already released its trailer. While the theme of the next adventure has yet to be revealed, the trailer showed what possibly supernatural case mystery awaits the duo. And while in the previous seasons, the cases have been more practical, the "Sherlock" special will be a bit more ghostly and a lot more Victorian.

Meanwhile, "Sherlock" season 4 has been set for a 2017 release date, but both Moffat and Mark Gatiss have yet to begin penning down Sherlock Holmes and John Watson's next adventure.
