Whovians may have to come to grips that "Doctor Who" season 10 will be star Peter Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat's last.

Before 2015's cheery Christmas special aired, Capaldi sat down with The Telegraph, where he revealed he's yet to confirm any "Doctor Who" commitments beyond season 10.

"This could be my final year - it's terrifying," the 57-year-old said.

"I love 'Doctor Who' but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things. There will come a time when this is over. But I knew that when I started."

Apparently, Capaldi has been thinking about his regeneration scene since he took over from Matt Smith back in 2013.

The Scottish actor is the twelfth and latest actor to portray the Doctor, a time-travelling alien who explores the universe in a sentient spaceship that looks like an old British police box usually with a human companion.

As Cinema Blend pointed out, the Doctor is still without a companion after Jenna Coleman vacated the post in season 9. Now there are rumors showrunner Steven Moffat may also leave the show.

In a lengthy interview with Radio Times, Moffat revealed he's "actively engaged" in finding the right person to take over. But it's not like the 54-year-old is leaving on a whim.

"Everything is difficult in 'Doctor Who,' including leaving, and I would never do anything to harm it," he said.

After six years on the job, Moffat described the "emotional difficulty of leaving" as hard.

Asked if he would return to write individual "Doctor Who" episodes after leaving, he said he still hasn't thought about it.

"I mean, I can understand Russell [T Davies not doing it]. I'm gobsmacked by how much 'Doctor Who' I've written - an insane amount."

"Doctor Who" is currently on break after it wrapped up season 9 last month. Season 10 has yet to start filming.
