Have the mysteries of Redbeard and Scarlet Roll been unlocked? "Sherlock" season 4 spoilers unleashed!

The latest "Sherlock" Christmas special has not only brought in a humongous surprise for fans of the BBC series in terms of knowing its connection to the coming season 4, but that it also brought forth spoilers for what's coming: Redbeard and Scarlet roll.

It may be a while before "Sherlock" season 4 arrives but already, fans have been trying to unravel the mystery of the inscription in Mycroft's notebook, especially since rumors have been circling that this is one big spoiler for the coming season.

A report by FTW revealed that as the "Sherlock" Christmas special concluded, showrunners made it a point to insert bits and pieces of spoilers for fans who have been waiting for a long time for season 4. Among the many possibilities presented by the Christmas special are the supposed clues on Mycroft's notebook, Redbeard and scarlet roll.

"Did anyone else get a good look at the notebook Mycroft was carrying? Scribbled inside were notes like 'Redbeard', which is Sherlock's childhood dog, the numbers '611174' and the phrase 'Scarlet Roll'," the report revealed.

In an interview with EmpireOnline in 2014, showrunner Mark Gatiss, who also plays Sherlock's brother Mycroft and returning to season 4 revealed the story behind Redbeard in season 3. He said, "when [Sherlock] was little - and obviously Mycroft tormented him about it - is that his dog died, and he totally fell for the idea that Redbeard had gone to live in a happy valley somewhere," added Gatiss.

Meanwhile, fans have been wondering about scarlet roll and what it means for "Sherlock" season 4. According to spoiler theories, scarlet roll could simply be a misdirection, as showrunners have often done this in the BBC series. Redditor theycallmejamo pointed out, "I reckon that this is a deliberate trick to lead us astray."

"Here's why: See at the bottom of the page? It reads: 'Scarlet Roll M[o or e?].' Well, what's a 'roll mo'? Looking it up on Google, I came to this page, which states that 'Rollmops are pickled herring fillets, rolled (hence the name) into a cylindrical shape, often around a savoury filling'," added the comment. "So a rollmop is herring. And scarlet is a colour... the colour red. A red herring.  We've been duped," the user pointed out.

Indeed, such spoilers on Redbeard and scarlet roll could be a misdirection. Does this mean Moriarty's return is inevitable for "Sherlock" season 4?
