"Assassin's Creed" is set to hit theaters this year and hopes are high for the film to break the streak of underwhelming, disappointing video game adaptations in Hollywood.

The fans of the hit video game "Assassin's Creed" were hyped up when award-winning actor Michael Fassbender was confirmed to lead the film. It even got more exciting when an impressive cast was announced, including Marion Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson, Michael Kenneth Williams and Jeremy Irons who will be portraying Abstergo CEO Alan Rikkin.

According to Movie Pilot, Michael Fassbender will not be taking the role of "Assassin's Creed" protagonist Desmond Miles, but a new character named Callum Lynch.

"When Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) explores the memories of his ancestor Aguilar and gains the skills of a Master Assassin, he discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society," the official synopsis from IMDB reads. Also confirmed is that rather than the period during the Crusades as it is in the video game, the film will be set in 15th Century Spain.

Furthermore, according to Cheat Sheet, Animus will be heavily utilized as a plot device throughout the film. Animus, in the games, is a machine in the modern age which is hooked up to a direct descendant of one of the Assassins. Accordingly, Animus enables him to live through his past in the time period he existed in previously.

Meanwhile, adding up to the superb cast is also a formidable team behind the camera. Taking the helm for "Assassin's Creed" is "Macbeth" director Justin Kurzel, who has previously worked with Fassbender. Kurzel will also be working with "Macbeth" writer Michael Lesslie. This "Macbeth" team may just put a Shakesperean approach to "Assassin's Creed." Screenplay will be worked on by "Exodus: Gods and Kings" writers Bill Collage and Adam Cooper.

And while some fans are still worried if "Assassin's Creed" will work, Michael Fassbender is confident that the film will do good.

"We're striving to find something special. We believe the whole concept around it is special and want to service that the best we can. The fans are really passionate: very specific and they expect accuracy and historical detail. We're really trying to capitalize and feed on and enjoy the fun element. We're working hard to make this something special," Fassbender said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
