This new diet craze called 5:2 diet is the newest trend among American dieters today. It was introduced by Dr. Michael Mosley and it is about undergoing intermittent fasting as the key to weight loss. In five days of the week, the person can eat whatever food he desires but for the remaining two nonconsecutive days, he must limit his food calorie intake to about 500 for women and 600 for men calories only.

 Obesity is a worldwide predicament especially in the United States. According to the statistics by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one third of their population is obese. Subsequently, the World Health Organization reports that the number of obese people has doubled since 1980. An estimated 1.4 billion people around the world are obese. Most of the diseases that cause mortality are caused by obesity and having a sedentary lifestyle. Diabetes and cardiovascular diseases are the top causes of mortality globally and these can be caused by being obese. Obesity can be caused by overeating and an imbalance in the calorie intake and calorie expenditure.

Today, there are many diet fads but some of them neglect the body of the needed nutrients. However, in 5:2 diet, the individual can eat what he normally eats for five days. It's just that, for two non-consecutive days, he needs to restrict his calorie intake to 600 calories. Intermittent fasting is the news theory that aids in weight loss. It is dubbed as a way of life rather than a diet fad because it can prolong life and reduce risks for diseases. Studies have found out that intermittent fasting can lead to reduction of risk for Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

Subsequently, it aids in healthy brain aging limiting the risk for dementia. Clinical trials of intermittent fasting have revealed that it can be a treatment for asthma as well as weight loss.
