Rumors have it that heavy metal band Metallica might release their new album in 2016.

Guitarist Kirk Hammett revealed in an interview that Metallica's new album has a good chance of being released in 2016 or at the earliest time possible in 2017.

"Well, you know, we're moving forward," guitarist Kirk Hammett said in an interview back in November, according to Loudwire. "We're hoping that the album will be released next year. It's pretty much more along the same lines as Death Magnetic - kind of like that direction. And, you know, we'll see. We're into it."

The 53-year-old guitarist also offered some sort of a timeline as to when the band plans to release their new album.

"I don't wanna say that we're a third into it, or two-thirds into it, or an eighth into it, 'cause anything could happen that'll just change that number," Hammett explained. "But, eventually, you will see a new Metallica album, and it will most likely be in 2016, and at the very worst, at the beginning of 2017."

Metallica also teased their long-awaited new studio album on the internet. It was on the eve of Christmas that the band released a video on their official website titled "Happy Holidayz." The video offered fans a 12-second snippet of one of the songs the band is working on, reported on Daily Mail.

In the video, Metallica frontman James Hetfield offered season's greetings from inside the studio before guiding a cat paws to hit play on a recording.

"Hey everybody, Happy Holidays from Tabs (the cat) and all of Metallica here in the studio," said frontman James Hetfield in the clip, reported Antimusic. "We thought we'd give you a little bit of ear candy for the holidays."

The music clip featured a blast of guitar and just a snippet of Hetfield's vocals. Fans can watch the clip by signing up for the Metallica newsletter on the band's website.
