Being drafted second after Kyrie Irving, Derrick Williams was expected to make instant impact despite not having a definite position in the NBA.  Kyrie, is now on his way to becoming a perennial All-Star, while the other, might be finding his way out of the league.

With elite athleticism and above average range, most people thought Derrick Williams will find a home with the offensively challenged Sacramento Kings. He would be a good fit alongside DeMarcus Cousins. However, his role became redundant when the Kings signed Rudy Gay for the long-term.

Williams can now be considered as a draft bust. He was a phenomenon in Arizona's run in the NCAA tournament. There was even a debate on who should be number 1 between him and Kyrie Irving. The key was because Irving played limited games for Duke in his one and only year due to injuries, whereas Williams had a celebrated college career for 2 years.

Thus, Williams became a cautionary tale for drafting players based on college accolades. The report is that the Kings have placed him on the trading block but they want to increase his trade value. From Cowbell Kingdom:

"It's no secret that Williams' time is coming to an end in Sacramento. He is regarded around the league as a reclamation project at best, and at worst, a bust. The Kings can sell him to other clubs as an expiring deal, or let him walk when free agency begins. The Kings want to squeeze the most out of their asset while they can. Middling and bottom-tier clubs would love to trade for Williams' contract to shed long-term salaries, but what Sacramento is currently doing is reminding NBA scouts and general managers that the 6-foot-8, 240-pounder retains his tantalizing potential."

There won't be too many teams interested in Williams. Perhaps the only takers would be a team like the LA Lakers who have too many needs and could use any help. However, the Kings need to sweeten the deal for the Lakers to help their division rivals.

With Julius Randle out for the whole season, he can get a lot of minutes as the team badly needs frontcourt help right now. With Kobe Bryant in the roster, you know you have to step it up a notch. Will he be able to turn his career around?
