Health trends come and go, and some stay for the time being. A review by Health examines health trends that promise weight loss or better health.

The review is based on research and anecdotes from health experts.

Based on the review, the following health trends can be considered as more hype than helpful:

Placenta Pills

This trend involves moms who just gave birth having their placenta encapsulated. The pills are said to prevent postpartum depression, boost energy, balance hormones, and increase milk production. According to Dr. Rachel Vreeman, assistant professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, such claims are not scientific. In fact, a number of women have reported that their symptoms worsened after taking the pills.

Going Gluten-Free

For people with celiac disease, it is necessary to go on a gluten-free diet. Celian disease creates an immune reaction to proteins found in grains such as wheat and barley, which is why patients diagnosed with this are advised to stay away from gluten. However, people who simply want to lose weight (and are not diagnosed with celiac disease) are better off dropping the gluten-free diet. According to registered dietician Katjerine Tallmadge, many of her clients report constipation and nutrient deficiency after doing the gluten-free diet. After all, gluten-free foods are low in fiber, contain a ton of calories and are low on vitamins and minerals.

Cleansing

Juice cleansing is all the rage these past few months. The juice cleanse claims to be a good detoxification process, wherein the person must consume liquids and minimal solid food for a few days or a week. Cleansing is a low-calorie, liquid-only practice that can assist in short-term weight loss. However, Ronni Litz Julien, RD, clarifies that juicing can contribute to water weight, which makes it easier to regain the weight as soon as regular eating resumes.
