In a statement released on Thursday,  the Cleveland Clinic confirmed that their surgeons successfully performed a nine-hour uterus transplant surgery on a 26-year-old woman.

The uterus came from a deceased donor. The hospital has scheduled a press conference for next week however they have since confirmed that the woman's condition has been stable.

Doctors from the Cleveland Clinic have previously spoken out about the criticisms on the uterus transplant. Some opposed believe that the transplant is an extreme and unrealistic procedure for women to go through just to induce pregnancy.

Dr. Andreas Tzakis, who works at the clinic, has argued that what the doctors did is life-enhancing.

"Unlike any other transplants, they are ephemeral. They are not intended to last for the duration of the recipient's life, but will be maintained for only as long as is necessary to produce one or two children"  Dr. Tzakis said last year, when plans for the operation were announced.
