Warning: this story may be graphic. A 15-year-old girl has just been rescued from her abusive grandparents. When she went out of her room, where she was confined for an unspecified length of time, she was only 40 pounds, with hardly any pulse, and dried feces underneath her nails.

The identities of her grandparents have not been disclosed in order to protect the girl from the public. However, it's reported that her grandfather is 58 years old while the spouse is 56. The girl will be turning 16 this month.

Based on court documents, the girl, who is believed to be suffering from mental and physical challenges, had been pulled out from her school by her grandfather about two years ago in order to be home-schooled. He also sent a letter to the school explaining that a problem with the girl's chromosome affected the teen's brain, which explains her behaviour.

When she was rescued, her room had only a few blankets, a bowl with some oatmeal, space heater, and a mattress. There was also a bucket, although the room's walls were littered with feces while the floor had some streaks of blood.

The documents also alleged that the couple participated in abusing the teen, hitting her with belt, dragging her through the stairs with her hair, and even feeding her with her own waste whenever they felt she committed an offense.

At 40 pounds, her doctors in Peyton Manning Children's Hospital confirmed that she is suffering from severe malnutrition with protruding bones along with bedsores. She's under critical condition.

Last Friday, her grandfather had been formally charged with 12 counts covering battery resulting to body injury and against a disabled, as well as neglect of their dependent. His wife, who was free via a bond, had to be arrested and charged with 11 counts of felony.
