Yay! for "Sherlock" Christmas special, but what about season 4?

What happens to Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in "Sherlock" season 4? Co-creator Steven Moffat shares development details, says script has yet to be written, but he knows this season will be tough for Sherlock and Dr. Watson.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-creator Steven Moffat updates fans worldwide about the happenings behind "Sherlock" season 4. While he does confirm what's to be expected in the next series, he shares that the script hasn't been written yet.

"We haven't started writing it yet, so it's early," Moffat shared. But he talks about the plans for "Sherlock" season 4, comparing it to previous seasons. He said, "The first series was all about the beginning of their friendship. Second about the formative stages, the love and fear and loss and all that. The third was good days, me and my pal and my pal's wife. Those are golden days. The missing element in a lot of Sherlock Holmes adaptations is allowing it to be funny. There's a lot of humor in Sherlock Holmes, and it's ignored in a lot of adaptations."

Talking about "Sherlock" season 4, the co-creator shared what fans are to expect for Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock and Martin Freeman's Dr. Watson. He said, "[Season 4] is going to be consequences. It's consequences."

"Chickens come to roost. It's dark in some ways-obviously it's great fun and a Sherlock Holmes romp and all that-but there's a sense of... things... coming back to bite you. It's not a safe, sensible way to live. It's hilarious and exhilarating some days, but some days it's going to be bloody frightening."

While "Sherlock" season 4 release date has been set on 2016, a Christmas Special will come by the end of the year. This, according to creators, will be a period version of "Sherlock" and is a complete stand-alone, not connected to previous seasons as well as the coming season 4.
