Elena Gilbert, Nina Dobrev's "The Vampire Diaries" character, will reportedly be portrayed by a new actress.

According to Movie News Guide, there are rumors that a replacement for Elena Gilbert is already under development. Nina Dobrev portrayed "The Vampire Diaries'" female protagonist up until its sixth season.

The publication commented that the actress' exit from the show has affected the cast and team. Moreover, The CW seems to be planning to get a new actress for the series.

Nina Dobrev's "The Vampire Diaries" character has currently been put under a spell by villain Kai since the actress wanted to leave. Apparently, Elena Gilbert's 60-year sleep was not planned and has resulted to issues regarding the show's future storylines.

It was previously reported that Nina Dobrev left "The Vampire Diaries" last April. "I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime," she wrote on Instagram.

"I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger."

Her former co-star Paul Wesley, who portrays Stefan Salvatore in the series, confirmed that Nina Dobrev's "The Vampire Diaries" character still has a big role in the story. "Her body's in danger in the first few episodes, and Damon is doing everything he can to make sure it stays safe if and when she wakes up," he said.

According to Kdramastars, Ian Somerhalder even said that the decision to keep Dobrev's character was intended to open opportunities for the actress to come back to the show. The 36-year-old actor portrays Damon Salvatore in the teen drama.

MNG added that flash-forwards in "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 also give clues on the dark future of the series. There are speculations that this might be the last season for the show.
