The setting for the events of "Resident Evil: Revelations 2" will be between "Resident Evil 5" and "Resident Evil 6." Claire Redfield will be the game's main protagonist with Moira Burton supporting her. The game also supports cooperative gameplay and stealth elements.

Paulmichael Contreras of PlaystationLifestyle.net reviewed episode 1, entitled "Penal Colony," and episode 2, entitled "Contemplation." He commented that "Resident Evil: Revelations 2" is definitely worth the player's time and money. Indicating that its predecessor, "Resident Evil: Revelations," was well-received, Contreras reported that Capcom has succeeded in following what the first game has achieved; only now it's in episodic form.

"'Penal Colony' doesn't look particularly flattering. Details and textures feel like a mid-tier PlayStation 3 game, which is disappointing... I would have just liked to see Capcom put a little more oomph in the visuals," Contreras wrote.

However, he admitted that the gunplay is pretty enjoyable as well as the cool mechanics during splitscreen play. There is also reportedly a tense aura about the game with the fitting background music and genuine scares from enemies coming out of nowhere.

"Resident Evil: Revelations 2, Episode 2: Contemplation" continues right where the first episode left off. It even carries over any BP, skills and weapons that the player has accumulated in the previous installment. There are two new supporting characters who are introduced as well.

The writer also saw a balance issue with the life of the players. Allegedly, player one often gets killed while player two can be revived when knocked down although it still depends how the individual characters are maneuvered.

The graphics are still lackluster and the cut-scenes are purportedly outdated. He added that there is not much gore in the setting despite being a horror game.

"The setting and ambiance are still very well-crafted, and the story moves along at a respectable pace. There are few, if any, noticeable filler sections throughout this episode," he wrote.
