Lionsgate has confirmed that Dean Israelite will be the director for the upcoming "Power Rangers" reboot.

It has been announced that Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are writing the script. The remake will be produced by Haim Saban, Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur. The story takes fans back to the origins of the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers."

The Power Rangers are a group of high school kids who become infused with extraterrestrial powers and come together to save the world. They are aided by giant mechanical vehicles named Zords.

The series became popular when it aired in 1993 on Fox Kids TV and was a pop-culture phenomenon. A 1995 theatrical film, entitled "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers," was based on the series. The original run of the series was aired until 1996.

Afterwards, the franchise was renamed as simply "Power Rangers." The original heroes were replaced with new characters and vehicles each year. "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie" is another theatrical film released in 1997. It presented the link between the "Power Rangers" series "Zeo" and "Turbo."

Dean Israelite seemed to have impressed the execs at Lionsgate with his presentation especially with his relative inexperience in directing feature films such as "Project Almanac." He is being represented by Principato-Young Entertainment and CAA.

It has been speculated that Morgan Freeman will be playing the part of Zordon, the ancient intergalactic being who created the Power Rangers in the original TV series. Zordon is known mostly as a giant floating head with a commanding voice.

"Morgan Freeman would be a perfect fit for Zordon, as the legendary actor is known most famously for his distinctive voice, which is very deep and very soothing," Venture Capital Post reported.

Meryl Streep has also been rumored to portray villain Rita Repulsa for the reboot. Austin St. John, a former cast member, recently got back to Hollywood which sparked speculations that he might reprise his role in the film.
