Officers investigated a home in Detroit, Michigan after receiving an anonymous tip from neighbors that a pig was inside feeding on human remains, according to The Huffington Post.
To everyone’s relief, there were reportedly no human remains, but Detroit police did discover a 400-to-500 pound pig living in the basement, which they eventually saved.
It took nearly 12 hours to get the pig out of the basement, according to CNN News.
“They eventually got the pig on the ramp and people pushed the pig up,” Detroit Police Captain Harold Rochon told CNN affiliate WDIV.
He reportedly stated that he had never seen anything like this before in his career. The room that the pig was living in, which was only accessible by ladder, was reportedly covered in an estimated two feet of feces.
Officials initially attempted to get the pig out of the basement using a harness and a series of ramps. They also reportedly offered the animal snacks, but the pig stay put.
“It’s kind of hard to make a 400-pound animal go up a ramp,” an animal rescue official stated.
The hog was reportedly taken to an animal rescue and rehabilitation facility south of the city.
The owner of the house, Gary Roquemore, was reportedly described by police as a “hoarder.” He was reportedly found dead from cardiovascular disease earlier in the week in a nearby home he also owned.
“There is a stench emanating from all three homes. It looks like at this time, preliminarily, this is a hoarder, so we can’t tell what we have in all three homes,” Assistant Detroit Police Chief Steve Dolunt stated.
