Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo used to be on-screen husband and wife in the highly watched medical drama, "Grey's Anatomy." However, things had to change when certain circumstances called for the actor's exit from the show.
In addition to killing off Derek Shepherd, the character that Dempsey used to portray, Pompeo's character will also be undergoing a massive physical change. Meredith Grey has just cut her hair short for "Grey's Anatomy" season 12.
Apparently, Pompeo had not actually planned to change her hair style. She told Into the Gloss that she had accidentally burned her hair and had no other choice but to chop off the damaged portion. Although everything started by accident, the change was welcomed by the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes. After all, the change would have indicated that Meredith is no longer broken following the death of her on-screen husband, Derek.
Meredith's very dark hair color was indicative of how dark she felt after Derek died at the end of the show's 11th season. When "Grey's Anatomy" returned for its 12th season, she was in a much better place. That said, Pompeo strongly believes that cutting her hair short and lightening the color will tell fans that Meredith has moved on.
"Shonda said, 'We are going to make the show lighter and brighter!'" Pompeo said. "'We want to change the tone now. We were all in such a bad place last year. We all need a little lightness and fun!' So, I was, like, 'I am going to lighten up my hair!'" With that in mind, the actress contacted Harry Josh to have her hair bleached to blonde.
In related news, Pompeo had also previously revealed, according to Design & Trend, that, even if she is a celebrity, she is not fond of wearing makeup. "Not that doctors cannot wear makeup!" she added. "But, I just feel like it takes away from the acting and the character if I have makeup on!"
