It's been an amazing year for women in sports and Serena Williams is no stranger to the headlines.

Named as Sports Illustrated's 'Sportsperson of the Year', Williams, 34, still ranks as the number one female tennis player in the world. Williams made records by winning three major titles.  Her Grand Slam singles titles were reportedly one title short from Steffi Graffi's record.

By the end of 2015, it was reported that Williams earned $145 million, $74 million from prize money alone. But it wasn't an easy journey for Williams as she battled sickness, injuries, racism and body issues throughout the year.

According to DailyMail, Williams has been suffering from a knee condition similar to that of Rafael Nadal and that she had to take care of it in order to keep on going.

She has suffered from flu and colds before her tournaments, even opting to default if her fever reaches an uncontrollable temperature. Furthermore, her loss to Roberta Vinci made her shut herself away from people but Williams has bounced back since then.

According to ESPN, Patrick Mouratoglou, her tennis coach, has been guiding Williams with her preparation and game tactics. Although Mouratoglou was rumored to be William's boyfriend, he stated that their relationship has always been professional.

Patrick Mouratoglou has coached many tennis players before but his coaching for Serena Williams has been his best yet, earning him $5 million net worth for 2015. Mouratoglou has this to say about their achievements back in Sept. 2015:

"We have a lot more things to achieve," he said. "She was already incredible before. But I think, my role is to find a way to do even better, otherwise there's no point in being there. So I'm happy I've made a difference."

Guardian recently reported that Williams had to pull out of the Hopman Cup because of her knee injury and they added that while she arrived on Perth last Saturday, there were no hints of an injury concern before she pulled out.
