Jet lag is an unwelcome side effect of air travel which Airbus is hoping to address with new features on their latest A350 XWB passenger jets.

According to Quartz, part of the aerospace giant's $15 billion investment for the A350 XWB line includes design elements designed specifically to reduce jet lag.

The passenger jet's interior has reportedly been outfitted with LED lighting to simulate normal shifts of sunlight. The goal is to help the body sync faster as it travels through different time zones.

Other features to help reduce jet lag include the A350 XWB's carbon fiber-reinforced plastic construction which allow it to have more humid cabin while making it lighter and more fuel-efficient as well as less prone to corrosion.

Passengers also enjoy better air quality via a filtration system that "turns over the air in the plane every two to three minutes." In theory, this could promote better sleep.

"The design process was about optimization, pushing the constraints, and opening up the box of solutions," A350 XWB program chief engineer Alain De Zotti told Fast Company.

But do all the features Airbus put in the aircraft actually help mitigate jet lag?

LED lighting could, in principle, work since light therapy "is often used to remedy jet lag and other circadian rhythm disorders," Medical Daily said.

Having noted that the A350 XWB has yet to undergo clinical trials, the website did advise to take Airbus' claims with a grain of salt.

The team behind the passenger jet also included other comforts including wider-than-standard seats in economy class and a wing designed to reduce noise making for a more pleasant ride.

The aircraft is currently in service with Qatar Airways and reportedly made its US debut recently. Helping reduce jet lag could prove as one of the Airbus A350 XWB features frequent fliers will love.
