As the flu epidemic gets worse, preventing catching the virus is better than treating it. Up to date, the flu epidemic has reached all 36 states and has killed at least 15 children since October. However, there are simple steps that can help dodge the flu and strengthen one's immune system.

1.    Wash Hands Regularly

First things first, the best way to prevent the transfer of pathogens or germs from one person to another is through hand washing. It will protect the body not only from the flu virus but from all sorts of microorganisms that can cause illness.

Pathogens can be found almost everywhere, from the table top, the toilet and even on surfaces inside the house. It can get carried to many parts of the body and can cause all sorts of diseases. Hand washing makes sure that all these pathogens are removed. However, a quick rinse is not enough. The best way to wash the hands is to use soap and water for about 20 seconds or by singing the "Happy Birthday" song two times.

2.    Clean and Sanitize

It does not take much effort to kill and eradicate viruses, bacteria and other disease-causing microorganisms. Cleaning houses, schools and other public places will make certain that people are protected from germs including the influenza virus, the culprit in the flu outbreak in the United States.

Health officials are encouraging constituents to observe cleanliness of their houses through disinfection of desks, doorknobs, phones and keyboards. In schools, sanitation of toilets, offices and desks should also be observed. At work, elevators, computer keyboards, door knobs, and light switches should be cleaned regularly.

3.    Get the Flu Vaccine

Although the flu vaccines were not able to combat the flu outbreak this year, it can still protect the body against some strains of flu. They are designed to protect the body against three to four virus strains. According to medical experts, being vaccinated can at least reduce the severity of the illness. Hence, preventing serious complications brought about by the flu.
