In this digital age when all celebrities can look flawless and perfect thanks to airbrushing, pop star Demi Lovato decided to take the road less traveled. Not only did she pose nude, but she categorically specified not to have any of her photos retouched.

The photo shoot was spontaneous. Patrick Ecclesine, who has worked for some of the biggest entertainment companies in Hollywood such as DreamWorks and Warner Brothers, was in New York to "shadow" Philymack's CEO Phil McIntyre. Philymack is the music talent management firm that currently handles the career of Nick Jonas, Chord Overstreet of Glee, and Lovato.

During the course of their discussion, the Philymack team talked about Lovato's recent personal crisis. Buddy Moore, her great-grandfather, had recently died, and they were concerned for Lovato.

True enough, Lovato arrived "emotionally drained." With a small smile and hello, she greeted Ecclesine, and both started to talk about her feelings. Lovato was about to launch her album Confident and her great-grandfather's passing had somehow made her realize the shortness of life. Putting two and two together, she decided to do an impromptu photo shoot that's raw and showcases her newfound confidence-walking the talk, as she said, about the album's message.

At midnight, the photo shoot began with only her assistant as their spectator and companion. They hardly communicated verbally, using usually body gestures and eye contact to give each other an idea what they wanted to capture.

The result: gorgeous honest photos you can now check out at Vanity Fair.

The 23-year-old Disney darling who rose to fame in Camp Rock has been open about her personal struggles including depression, bulimia, self-harm, which she attributed to several years of bullying during her childhood. She was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She entered rehab and lived in a sober facility to help her get her life back.
