It seems like Ian Somerhalder still wants ex-girlfriend Nina Dobrev to come back to "The Vampire Diaries."

Movie News Guide reported that Ian Somerhalder has confirmed Nina Dobrev's return to "TVD." The 36-year-old actor portrays Damon Salvatore while Dobrev took on Elena Gilbert's role.

According to Kdramastars, Ian Somerhalder even said that the decision to keep Dobrev's character was intended to open opportunities for the actress to come back to the show. "TVD" cast Paul Wesley also confirmed that Elena Gilbert is still in the series.

"Elena's still a very big part of the story," Wesley admitted. "Her body's in danger in the first few episodes and Damon is doing everything he can to make sure it stays safe if and when she wakes up."

Ian Somerhalder teased that Elena was very much alive during Comic-Con 2015. His wife, Nikki Reed, was said to have worried that the ex-couple may rekindle their romance if the actress will come back to "The Vampire Diaries."

However, it seems like Nina Dobrev is intent on moving on with her career. She was featured in horror comedy "The Finals Girls" and has been casted for 2016 drama "Arrivals."

It was previously reported that Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder are still arguing over when to have kids. Apparently, the major conflict stemmed from Ian Somerhalder wanting a baby now while the "Twilight" actress still wants to build her career.

Amidst the divorce rumors, though, the couple uploaded a video in support of animal rights. The clip showed Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder taking care of their dog. Inquisitr commented that the couple seemed sincere in their efforts to protect animal rights.

"I'm Fighting DOGFIGHTING," the actor captioned the video.

"Stand with me? Go to http://www.hsi.org/ian to see the rest of this video-this kind of malicious cruelty to animals is simply unacceptable. Using our collective voice is the only way to insure that we stop it. Stand with me. What do you think?"
